Almeida Insights: Charitable Giving Joins The List of COVID-19 Casualties

According to research conducted for the Australia Giving Report by Good2Give and Charities Aid Foundation, 68% of Australians in 2019 made charitable contributions. This was either by a money donation direct to charity, giving to their church or religious organisation or sponsoring someone. Charities for children were the most popular cause for Australians, holding a 30% share of all donations. As many Australians are time poor it was no surprise to see that monetary donations were the most popular type of contributions (68%), with only 35% volunteering their time.
In our latest piece of research in partnership with Pureprofile, we delved into COVID-19s impact on Australian charities and found that prior to COVID-19, 44% of Australians donated frequently to charity. Since March this year 32% have stopped their donations to charities completely. Sadly, a fair chunk of these fall into the under 35’s, an age group who are among the last to sign up to charitable giving, and the first to pull out.
