As the world edges closer to 2030, households across Australia, Germany, the Netherlands, and New Zealand are rethinking their relationship with energy – but not always for the reasons you might expect.
While rooftop solar and home batteries dominate as the most impactful renewable technologies in every region surveyed, the motivations behind adoption tell a different story. The overwhelming driver? Lower power bills. From Australia (56%) to Germany (55%), the Netherlands (52%) and New Zealand (63%), cost savings are consistently ranked far above environmental concerns – which hover around just 10–12% in all countries.
Here’s what we discovered:
To gain a deeper understanding, we surveyed a nationally representative sample of people in Australia (N=501), New Zealand (N=509), Germany (N=510), and the Netherlands (N=508) to explore consumer attitudes toward renewable energy – uncovering key drivers, tech perceptions, and the pace of change.
