How we go about our lives has changed since the start of the pandemic – we’ve adapted our approach to work, education, and social interactions. These major life changes have subsequently had an impact on how we view our personal values.
As life came to a standstill, it presented the opportunity to focus and re-evaluate the importance of safety, relationships, interests, possessions and status amongst other things.
In July 2021, we asked our global panel about key changes in their life priorities since the beginning of the pandemic. The study was made up of 2,053 people – a nationally representative sample of respondents in the United Kingdom, United States, Australia and New Zealand. Here are the results:
‘Openness to change’ values have stayed more or less the same for most respondents (AU 50%, UK 48%, US 47% and NZ 36%).
Almost half of the respondents across the 4 countries say that their self-enhancement values have become more important since the pandemic (US 53%, NZ 53%, UK 52%, AU 48%).
Nearly half of respondents from the UK and 45 per cent from the US stated they had undergone bigger life changes since the beginning of the pandemic.
43 per cent from the US and 41 per cent from the UK stated that their life priorities have changed a lot compared to 39 per cent from AU and 37 per cent from NZ.
Half of UK respondents were at least moderately worried about getting COVID-19, compared to 43 per cent in both the US and AU, and 40 per cent in New Zealand.
