Aussies’ go-to gift cards this Christmas: What Australians are buying and spending in 2025

Gift cards are a Christmas classic across Australia, and our latest survey reveals how Aussies plan to use them this year – from the most popular gift card types, to spending habits and the key features people look for when choosing the perfect option.

Retail gift cards are the clear favourite, with nearly three in four Australians (73%) planning to buy them this Christmas. After that, Aussies are also choosing gift cards for food & beverage (24%) and fashion & beauty (24%), with entertainment (23%) close behind. Travel (13%) rounds out the list as the least common pick.

When it comes to budget, most Australians are keeping things in the mid-range. 41% plan to spend $51–$100 on gift cards this Christmas, followed by 36% budgeting $25–$50. Smaller groups will spend under $25 (6%), $101–$200 (11%), or $200+ (6%).

And while gift cards are often seen as the “easy” gift, Aussies still want them to feel thoughtful. Personalisation is the top priority (34%), followed by discounts or bonuses (22%). Value and convenience (18%) and brand popularity (15%) also play a role in what people choose.
We surveyed 1,001 Australians to uncover Christmas gift card trends – from what types people are buying, to how much they plan to spend, and what matters most when picking a gift card in 2025.
