Tracking sentiment towards EVs in Australia & New Zealand

Our latest electric vehicle study reveals existing Aussie & Kiwi EV owners would purchase an EV again in the future, but the rising cost of living is hindering prospective buyers.

Conducted in March 2024, the research gathered perceptions and attitudes toward the emerging electric vehicle market from over 2,000 Australian and 1,000 New Zealand respondents and follows an initial survey conducted in August 2023.

Here’s what we found:

94% of existing Aussie EV owners (compared to 89% in Wave 1) and 83% of existing Kiwi EV owners (compared to 86% in Wave 1) are likely to buy an EV again in the future

70% of Aussies and 65% of Kiwis say the rising cost of living has limited their ability to buy an EV

The number of Kiwis who intend to buy a new car in the next 12 months DECREASED by 6 percentage points (45% in Wave 1 to 39% in Wave 2). 41% of them are likely to choose petrol, up from 34% in Wave 1

The importance of ENERGY EFFICIENCY for Aussies, when considering an EV, increased by 5 percentage points (33% in Wave 1 to 38% in Wave 2)

Concern about prospective road user taxes DOUBLED in New Zealand, but remained unchanged in Australia
