2023 has been dominated by the cost-of-living conversation. With financial pressure a real concern for many this Christmas, a large percentage of people across the globe are set to cut back on their festive budgets – including spend on food & drink, gifts and travel.
To understand more about how people will celebrate this year, we surveyed more than 4,500 members from our research panels in Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, the UK and the USA, comparing historical data from previous reports where possible. This is what we discovered:
Of those with festive worries, who has concerns about extra demands on finances? New Zealand (43%), UK (38%), Australia (38%), Singapore (34%) and USA (25%)
Who will cut back on festive food and drink? Singapore (44%), Australia (43%), New Zealand (38%), UK (37%) and USA (28%)
International travel is on the cards for some: Singapore (22%), New Zealand (7%), USA (7%), Australia (6%) and UK (5%)
Despite financial pressures, the majority are feeling positive about the festive season: USA (70%), Singapore (66%), New Zealand (62%), UK (55%), and Australia (54%)
Overall more than 40% of global respondents say the ideal Christmas is one spent at home, feasting with family
